Recessive hypotrichosis

Hypotrichosis is characterized by reduced hair growth, leading to a sparse coat or even complete hair loss. While many types of hypotrichosis are inherited dominantly, a recessive form of the condition stems from a mutation in the gene encoding serum/glucocorticoid regulated kinase family, member 3 (SGK3).

Puppies with SGK3-related hypotrichosis are born with a very thin, fuzzy coat that is lost within the initial months of life, leaving the dog completely bald. Currently, two variations of this mutation have been identified. One variation is responsible for the unique hairlessness seen in the American Hairless Terrier, while the other results in hair loss in a segment of the Scottish Deerhounds population.
