General information

Primary Open Angle Glaucoma (POAG) is an eye disorder that builds up pressure in the eye and affects the nerves of the retina, damaging vision. This variant of the disease, caused by a recessive mutation to the gene ADAMTS17, occurs in the Basset Fauve de Bretagne. Similar variants also occur in the Basset Hound, Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen, and Chinese Shar-Pei.

Clinical features

Affected dogs experience a progressive increase of pressure in the eyes (intra-ocular pressure, IOP), which becomes apparent around 5 years of age. Signs can include excessive squinting, blinking, tearing and redness of the eyes. If left untreated, the disease will result in a gradual loss of vision.
