General information
Acute intermittent porphyria is a rare metabolic disease and is characterised by reduced production of heme, the precursor of hemoglobin.
Clinical features
Cats can have brown discoloured teeth that fluores pink under UV light. Additionally, cats can have reddish-brown urine and bones.
Cats build up liver-metabolites and this can cause acute porphyria seen as acute pain and potentially vomiting.
Additional information
Cats presenting with brown discoloured teeth may have either porphyria or congenital erythropoietic porphyria.
