General information

In pigeons, the protein glutathione-disulfide reductase (encoded by the gene GSR) plays an important role in the bird’s ability to sense magnetic fields. Research has linked a mutation that increases the expression of GSR to improved navigation and homing ability in pigeons. Approximately 80% of pigeons bred for homing are homozygous for the mutation. The GSR mutation is therefore a useful performance marker.

Clinical features

Birds affected by the GSR mutation show increased levels of GSR expression in organs such as the wattle and eyes. This leads to an increased sensitivity to magnetic fields, and therefore to an improvement in homing ability.
