General information
Hypothyroidism is a hormonal disorder in which the thyroid gland is underactive, causing a range of health issues. There are two mutations known in cats to cause this hormonal disorder. These variants can occur in all breeds and are both caused by a recessive mutation to the gene TPO. This test is designed to measure the mutation that changes the aminoacid Alanine into Threonine.
Clinical features
Signs of hypothyroidism in cats can include lethargy/inactivity, decreased apetite, reduced growth, thinning or matted hair, unexplained weight gain, constipation, and a decreased body temperature.
