General information
Hair length is an important morphological trait for many cat breeds. In cats, the ancestral phenotype is for short hair. However, several different recessive mutations to the gene FGF5 are capable of giving affected cats a long-haired phenotype instead.
The known FGF5 mutations in cats have been given the designation M1 through M5. A cat with any two of these alleles (two of the same, or two different ones) will be affected. This specific test analyses the M1 allele, which has been identified in the Ragdoll.
Clinical features
Affected cats have long coat hairs instead of short. Hair length may still vary from breed to breed.
