General information

The snowdrop dilution gene (SLC45A2) is characterized by the dilution of both red and black pigment. This type of dilution has previously been identified in Gypsy and Tinker horse breeds. The cause of the snowdrop dilution is an autosomal recessive single-nucleotide change within the SLC45A2 gene. The same gene in which variants are responsible for other horse dilutions such as Cream, Pearl, and Sunshine.
The Snowdrop dilution has been identified in Gypsy Vanners, Irish Cobs, and Tinkers and can appear phenotypically similar to cremello.

Clinical features

Phenotypically, the snowdrop dilution appears similar to cremello. A single dose (one copy of the snowdrop allele) does not affect the coat colour of black, bay, or chestnut horses. However, a double dose (two copies of the snowdrop allele) will result in the snowdrop coat colour.

Additional information

This test specifically detects one mutation in the SLC45A2 gene that is associated with the Snowdrop dilution. Mutations in other dilution genes may produce coat colours that resemble Snowdrop. Please note that this test is based on an association study.
