General information
X-linked tremor is a congenital neurological disorder of the Central Nervous System (CNS). Oligodendrocytes produce an insulating sheat consisting of myelin cells that cover the axons of the nerves. In X-linked tremor the production of this insulating sheat is affected which leads to abnormal movement and affects self-movement and body position.
Clinical features
Symptoms are already observed with 2 weeks of age. Affected puppies suffering from X-linked tremor have difficulties with standing, moving and eating. The disease progresses with age and will lead to seizures. Affected dogs are also smaller in size compared to unaffected dogs. The life expectancy of affected dogs will not exceed 3-4 months after diagnosis.
Additional information
X-linked tremor is a X-linked recessive trait which means that the disorder is located on the X chromosome. The phenotype will always be expressed in male dogs, while female dogs do not usually express the phenotype.
