General information
Sensory neuropathy (SN) is a severe neurological disease caused by a recessive mutation in the FAM134B gene. Animals with the disease show degeneration of sensory nerve cells and motor nerve cells.
This variant is for all breeds.
Clinical features
Affected puppies manifest at approximately 7 months of age with ataxia (loss of coordination) in the limbs. The disease progresses to cause loss of sensation, "knuckling" of the hind paws and self-mutilation of the paws, which often necessitates surgical amputation of damaged toes.
