General information

Acral Mutiliation Syndrome (AMS) is a severe neurological disorder found in several Pointer and Spaniel breeds. AMS causes a loss of pain sensitivity in the limbs, often leading to affected dogs aggressively licking or biting at their own paws, severely injuring them without noticing. The disorder is caused by a recessive mutation to the gene GDNF.

Clinical features

Onset of AMS symptoms occurs at approximately 4 months of age. Affected puppies lose sensation in their paws and often lick or bite at them. This results in ulcers, claw loss, painless bone fractures and ultimately amputated toes. There is no loss of motor control or coordination.
