General information

Sebaceous Gland Dysplasia is a skin disorder in domestic cats that causes abnormal sebaceous glands, resulting in crusty skin and poor coat thickness. The disease is caused by a recessive mutation to the gene SOAT1.

Clinical features

Affected kittens present by the age of four months with dry, dark debris formed on the skin surrounding the eyes, nose and ears, as well as dark crusting on the legs and an abnormally thin coat of hair, including possible alopecia (patches of hair loss). The exposed skin also becomes more vulnerable to yeast infections. No reliable, effective treatment has been established yet.
