General information

The coat composition of dogs is determined by various genes. The coat can be either single-layered or double-layered. A double coat consists of a top coat with coarse guard hairs and a softer undercoat. In single-coated breeds, the undercoat is absent.

One strongly associated mutation that is shown to influence this feature of coat composition is found upstream of the ADRB1 gene on chromosome 28. The mode of inheritance is probably autosomal recessive, though this is not confirmed yet.

Clinical features

Affected dogs will have a double coat instead of a single-layered coat. Dogs with the genotype T/T will have a single coat (top coat with coarse guard hairs), while dogs with C/C will have a double coat (top coat with coarse guard hairs and a softer undercoat). For heterozygous dogs (T/C), the coat type is typically a single coat.

Additional information

Studies suggest that due to the influence of unidentified genes on this mutation, the dog's phenotype may not always align with its genetic makeup. This means that the dog's physical appearance and its genotype might not match-up.
