General information

Cats have three main blood types: A, B and AB (also known as “C”). These blood types are determined by specific antigens on the surface of red blood cells, which are controlled by variants in the cytidine monophospho-N-acetylneuraminic acid hydroxylase (CMAH) gene. This gene influences the type of sialic acid expressed on the red blood cell membrane, and different variants lead to different blood group phenotypes (the serologic blood type).

In this test several genetic tests are performed to measure CMAH variants (b1, b2, b3 and c) to accurately predict a cat’s blood type. Each variant contributes differently to the expression of A, B or AB antigens. By analysing all six markers together, the test can distinguish between type A, type B, type AB, and identify carriers that may not be detectable through serological blood typing alone.

Additional information

The genetic test for determining blood group in cats is available for most domestic breeds, but accuracy for wild cats is unknown due to a lack of reference samples.

In a small percentage of all cases, results may be inconclusive due to unidentified genetic variations. This occurs more often in the Maine Coon breed.

In this test, the OMIA variants assessed for blood type B are 119, 800 and 1062. For blood type AB, the test includes OMIA variant 799, which detects the presence of the c allele.
