General information
Primary Open Angle Glaucoma (POAG) is an eye disorder that builds up pressure in the eye and affects the nerves of the retina, causing pain and damaging vision. This variant of the disease occurs in the Norwegian Elkhound, and is caused by a recessive mutation to the gene ADAMTS10. A similar variant occurs in the Beagle.
Clinical features
POAG in the Norwegian Elkhound is usually diagnosed in middle-aged to elderly dogs, when they start to experience more significant vision impairment. Earlier signs can include impaired peripheral vision, increased intraocular pressure and the formation of cataracts.
