General information
The mutation analysed in this test, which affects the gene POMC, has been linked to increased food motivation and higher body weight in the Labrador Retriever and Flat-Coated Retriever. The mutation has been noted to occur at a greater rate in Labradors selected to be assistance dogs rather than pets, possibly because a high degree of food motivation makes a dog more easily trainable.
Clinical features
Dogs carrying this mutation are likely to have a greater degree of food motivation and more potential for obesity than those without it.
Additional information
The mutation in this test should be considered a risk factor. It is associated with the disorder, but does not necessarily guarantee it. Obesity and appetite have many factors, both genetic and environmental.
