General information
Canine Hereditary Nephritis (HN) is a group of inherited glomerular diseases of the kidneys, which often progress to renal failure. X-linked nephritis is caused by mutations in the alpha 5 chain of collagen type IV (COL4A5). This variant of the disorder is found in the Samoyed. A related variant has also been observed in the Navasota dog.
Clinical features
Clinical signs include for affected dogs include proteinuria and the development of rapidly progressive renal failure. The symptoms are usually fatal before 1 year of age. Approximately 31% of the carrier female Samoyeds develop mild renal disease, and 38% progress to the final stage of the renal disease.
