Muscular Hypertrophy, also called Myostatin Deficiency or Double Muscling, is an unusual muscular disorder found in the Whippet. Caused by a recessive mutation to the MSTN gene, Muscular Hypertrophy causes the development of unusually large and well-defined muscles, which has been dubbed the “bully” phenotype by Whippet breeders.

Clinical features

“Bully” Whippets are easily distinguished by their heavy musculature, particularly around the upper legs and neck. Some affected dogs may also have a pronounced overbite. Carrier dogs do not have the full "bully" phenotype, but are still more muscular than unaffected dogs.

Aside from a tendency towards muscle cramps in the shoulder and thigh, there are no health risks associated with this phenotype.
