General information
Ichthyosis is a disease of the skin, causing itch, hair loss and the formation of dry, flaky “scales”. It is typically caused by defective or altered expression of the protein filaggrin. This variant, documented in a German Shepherd, is a result of a defect in the gene ASPRV1.
Clinical features
Onset of the condition is shortly after birth. Affected dogs develop patches of thin fur and greyish flakes or scales on the skin. The skin underneath is red, irritated and itchy.
