General information

Hair length is an important feature in many cat breeds. The original, or ancestral, trait in cats is short hair. However, several different recessive mutations in the FGF5 gene can cause cats to have long hair instead.

There are five known FGF5 mutations in cats, labelled M1 through M5. If a cat has any two of these mutated alleles (either the same or different ones), the cat will have long hair. This specific test analyses the M5 allele, which has been identified in the Maine Coon.

Clinical features

Affected cats have long coat hairs instead of short. Hair length may still vary from breed to breed.
