General information

Gallbladder mucoceles (GBM) are buildups of thickened mucus and/or bile in the gallbladder, which can result in gallbladder rupture, infection and other complications. It is caused by a defective ABCB4 gene found mainly in Shetland Sheepdogs.

Clinical features

Gall bladder mucocele is characterised by formation of cysts in the gall bladder. This causes hepatobiliary disease which has been recognized with increased frequency during the past several years.

Additional information

There are also studies published in which no statistically significant association could be found between the ABCB4 gen and gall bladder mucoceles.
