General information
Foal immunodeficiency syndrome (FIS) is a recessive disease leading to B-lymphocyte immunodeficiency and progressive anemia. The disease is caused by a mutation in the sodium/myo-inositol cotransporter gene (SLC5A3). Affected foals develop a non-hemolytic, non-regenerative progressive anemia, which is enough to cause death.
Clinical features
Clinical features are progressive and include anemia, lethargy, reduced appetite, weakness, diarrhea and poor growth.
