General information

Exfoliative Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus (ECLE) is a severe immune disorder affecting the skin, causing skin lesions, crusts and hair loss. The disease is caused by a recessive mutation to the gene UNC93B1, and is found in the German Shorthaired Pointer, Vizsla and related hunting dogs.

Clinical features

Affected dogs present between the ages of 6 months and 3 years with the formation of skin scales, mainly on the face, ears and back. The skin may develop patchy, reddened lesions and clinging crusts, as well as general hair loss on affected areas. In later stages, some affected dogs may also experience severe joint pain.
