General information
Early-Onset Adult Deafness (EOAD) is a progressive hearing disorder. This variant of EOAD, found in Rhodesian Ridgeback populations over the world, is caused by a recessive mutation to the gene EPS8L2. Other variants of EOAD are also found in the Border Collie.
Clinical features
Affected dogs may start developing hearing loss as early as 4 months of age. The disease is progressive, reaching complete deafness in both ears between 12 and 18 months of age. Males may be affected earlier than females.
