General information
Piebald – the presence of white spots or splotches on the coat – is caused by a mutation to the MITF gene, known commonly as the S-Locus (‘Spotting’ locus). The mutation is dominant, and a dog carrying at least one copy of the mutant allele will show some degree of white spotting.
Clinical features
Absence/reduction of melanocytes results in various degrees of white spotting, from tiny white spots up to completely white animals.
Additional information
Coat colour is an intricate trait that involves a combination of multiple different genes. Testing for a range of different loci will give the most complete prediction of a dog's coat colour genetics.
Specific breeds are undefined.
