General information
The Extension gene (MCR1 gene) controls the production of black and red pigment. The Extension (E) locus represents the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R). One allele at the E locus called E^M causing a black mask on the dogs face. The black mask is known as melanistic mask and causes a black-based coat.
Clinical features
The melanistic mask is only visible on dogs with a fawn or brindle coat. On the muzzle and occasionally the ears the mask can appear as black, liver, blue or isabella. Dogs with a black, brown or blue coat do not have a mask that is distinguishable from their original coat.
