Canine Leukocyte Adhesion Deficiency (CLAD) is a disorder of white blood cells and platelets that causes increased susceptibility to infections and bleeding tendencies. This variant of the disease, CLAD Type III, is caused by a recessive mutation in FERMT3, which causes malfunctioning of white blood cells and platelets. The variant is found in the German Shepherd

Clinical features

In dogs that suffer of Canine Leucocyte Adhesion Deficiency type III, the healing capacities are impaired. Affected dogs are highly vulnerable to infection. They are likely to die early in life from multiple severe infections, even if treated with massive doses of antibiotics.
