General information

Coat Colour E-locus (Chestnut) is one of the major coat colours in the horse. Chestnut coat colour is characterised by a red coat with the lack of black or brown pigments. Melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R), known as the extension (E) locus, is associated with the production and balance of black and red pigments. MC1R is the candidate gene for the chestnut coat colour in the horse. This test tests for the e^a variant found in several cold-blood breeds.

Clinical features

Chestnut coat colour is characterised by a red coat with the lack of black or brown pigments. The mane and tail of the horse have the same shade of chestnut as the body or it can be lighter compared to the body.
