General information

Polydactyly is an anatomical condition where an animal has more toes that usual. Polydactyly inherits in an autosomal dominant way. Multiple variants are known, the most well-known variant is the “Hemmingway mutation” (Hw-variant). This mutation occurs in Main Coons. Other tested mutations are the UK1 and UK2 variants.

All tested variants have a mutation in the ZRS enhancer of the LMBR1 gene. The mutations influence the regulation of the developmental Sonic Hedgehog (SHH) gene. This gene influences the development of limb buds, resulting in polydactyl limbs.

Clinical features

Polydactyly in cats, a birth defect, results in more than 18 digits. Extra toes can appear on any paw, in various combinations, and their occurrence follows an irregular statistical pattern. Polydactyly doesn’t influence the overall health of a cat. It is not painful or harmful and it doesn’t lead to more health issues.

Additional information

Other polydactyl variants exist but the causal mutations for these variants have not been discovered yet. Therefore they cannot be tested.
