General information
Ichthyoses comprise a large heterogeneous group of skin disorders characterized by the formation of dry, flaky “scales”. Many different metaphors have been used to describe the appearance and texture of the skin in the various types and stages of ichthyosis, for example fish skin.
This variant of the disorder, which occurs in the (Miniature) Poodle, is caused by a dominant mutation to the gene DSP.
Clinical features
Dogs with this variant show rough, dry, inelastic and irregularly thickened skin, giving a cobble stone pattern, coarse skin at the neck and thickened paw pads. In addition, hypotrichosis and non-curly (atypical for a poodle) hair coat, can occur.
