General information
The melanophilin (MLPH gene) is responsible for the intensity of the coat colour by affecting the distribution of melanin-containing cells. The dilute phenotype in cats is a “dilution” of the expected coal colour. The dilution affects eumelanin and phaeomelanin.
Clinical features
Cats expected to be black with the dilute phenotype turn grey (blue). Orange cats turn out cream coloured, Cinnamon dilutes into Fawn, it is described as "coffee and cream" or caramel colour. Chocolate/brown dilutes into lilac, it is described as dove or light taupe gray, and is sometimes called frost or lavender.
