General information

Severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) is a immuno deficiency disorder in dogs. This test is specific for a variant found in Jack Russel Terriers and is caused by an autosomal recessive mutation in the PRKDC gene. Dogs with SCID can not produce a protein important for proper immune function. Dogs without a proper immune function are vulnerable to severe recurrent or chronic bacterial, viral and fungal infections.

Clinical features

Symptoms are observed at around 12 to 14 weeks of age and include failure to thrive, poor growth, weight loss, lethargy, diarrhea, vomiting and lack of palpable lymph nodes.
