General information

Piebald – the presence of white spots or splotches on the coat – is caused by a mutation to the MITF gene, known commonly as the S-Locus (‘Spotting’ locus). The mutation is dominant, and a dog carrying at least one copy of the mutant allele will show some degree of white spotting.

Clinical features

Absence/reduction of melanocytes results in various degrees of white spotting, including tiny white spots, large white spots and even complete white animals in for example the boxer.

Additional information

Coat colour is an intricate trait that involves a combination of multiple different genes. Testing for a range of different loci will give the most complete prediction of a dog's coat colour genetics.

Specific breeds are undefined.
