General information
Early-Onset Adult Deafness (EOAD) is a progressive hearing disorder. This variant of EOAD, found in Rhodesian Ridgeback populations over the world, is caused by an autosomal recessive mutation to the gene EPS8L2. Other variants of EOAD are also found in the Border Collie.
Clinical features
Affected dogs may start developing hearing loss as early as 4 months of age. The disease is progressive, reaching complete deafness in both ears between 12 and 18 months of age. Males may be affected earlier than females.
