Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a neurological disease and is characterised by weakness and atrophy (degeneration) of muscles. Cats show gait abnormalities because muscles are affected.
Clinical features
Signs include gait abnormalities and a muscle tremor primarily involving the hindquarters. By the age of 5 months, the muscle atrophy is evident in all limbs. Cats usually show a gait of wide-placed forelimbs swaying pelvis.
