H417 Leukoencephalomyelopathy


Spongiform leukoencephalomyelopathy shows widespread vacuolation of white matter of the brain and spinal cord. Affected dogs developed tremors at 2 –9 weeks of age followed by progressive neurological worsening nerve dysfunction.

Test specific information



Symptoms will develop at a young age. Within a few hours to a maximum of several weeks after birth, the characteristics that go with these genetic effects will become visible.

Turn Around Time

The turn-around-time of a test depends to a large extent on the logistics of sample transportation to the laboratory. After receiving the sample at the test location, you can normally expect the result within 10 working days. A longer delivery time applies to tests carried out by a Partner Lab.

The following results are possible:

An animal can be free. When used in breeding this animal will not become ill due to the disease. It cannot spread the disease in the population.

An animal can be affected.
All offspring of affected females will also receive the disease allele. Affected females will also become ill.
Affected males will become ill. When used in breeding, the disease will not be inherited to the next generation.


The mutation is present in the mitochondrial DNA. Mitochondrial DNA is only inherited through maternal lines. This means, that all offspring of affected female individuals will also be affected.

Both male and female individuals can become affected by this disease.

Affected male individuals cannot spread the disease in the population.
