General information
Thrombasthenia also known as Glanzmann’s Thrombasthenia (GT) is a rare bleeding disorder characterised by defective platelets. Normally, platelets stick together to stop the flow of blood during injury until clotting and tissue repair occurs. Dogs with GT have normal platelet counts but have an abnormal platelet aggregation and blood clotting which can result in life-threatening bleeding.
Clinical features
Young dogs with GT start with having bleeding gums followed by nosebleeds, skin bruising and prolonged bleeding after surgery, after trauma and with heat. Furthermore, dogs with GT are usually smaller compared to dogs without GT.
